Range of Behaviors
There is a wide range of behaviors ppl adapt in their lives and circumstances
It's hard to gauge what is a pd and what is circumstantial due to so many behaviors being part of everyday life
Ex. Being unable to eat or sleep when broken up w, breaking into a cold sweat at thought of being trapped in an elevator
5 criteria for psychological disorders
clinical significance
must reflect dysfunction in a psychological, biological, or developmental process
behavior must be associated with significant distress or disability in important realms of life
individuals behavior can’t be socially deviant in terms of religion, politics, or other aspects of their identity
it is assumed to reflect a dysfunction within the individual
Pros of diagnosis label (labelling patient w pd as a doctor)
Individual will be able to receive treatment and be able to receive insurance reimbursement
Cons of diagnosis label (labelling patient w pd as a doctor)
Individual will be labelled with a psychological disorder that becomes part of their health records
May make it hard for individual to qualify for certain jobs
