Freedom of expression
The right to seek, receive, and impart information and ideas through media without government retaliation or censorship.
Symbolic speech
The use of nonverbal actions or objects to express a message or opinion, such as protests, marches, or wearing armbands.
Slander
An untrue spoken expression that injures a person’s reputation (as opposed to written).
Obscenity and pornography
Content that is overly sexual and offensive based on community standards and is thus not protected by the First Amendment
Procedural due process
The government must follow fair procedures before depriving a person of life, liberty and property
Warrant
A document issued by a legal or government official authorizing law enforcement to carry out an action relating to justice (eg arrest, search)
Probable cause
A legal standard that law enforcement must meet to conduct a search, arrest, or obtain a warrant; there must be a sufficient reason to believe that evidence of a crime will be found
Double jeopardy
An individual acquitted of a crime being charged with the same crime again in the same jurisdiction
Legal segregation/de jure segregation
The separation of groups by race, religion, or ethnicity that is enforced by law (such as Jim Crow laws)
De Jure segregation
De Facto segregation
The segregation of people based on race, etc., that exists in reality as opposed to because of law.
Social movement
An organized effort by a group of people to bring about social, political, or economic change through lobbying and protests, often with a goal of equality
Civil disobedience
When citizens publicly, actively, and nonviolently decide to disobey laws that they consider unjust, often to promote social or political change.
