Integumentary System
The system consisting of skin and its appendages, including glands, hair, follicles, nails, and other coverings.
Epidermis
The most superficial layer of the skin.
Dermis
The middle layer of skin that contains blood and lymph vessels, nerve fibers, and accessory organs.
Subcutaneous Layer
The deepest layer of skin that contains connective tissue.
Sebaceous Glands
Glands that secrete sebum, an oily substance.
Sweat Glands
Also known as sudoriferous glands; they secrete sweat.
Keratin
A type of protein that makes up hair, nails, claws, and the outer layer of skin.
Onych/o
The combining form for nails.
Pil/o
The combining form for hair.
Digital Pads
Thick areas of keratinized epithelium found in dogs and cats.
