Hyperkalemia is Diagnosed When?
Potassium serum concentration is greater than 5.0 mEq/L
Hyperkalemia Defintion?
Definition: Greater than normal amounts of potassium in the blood.
Hyperkalemia Symptoms?
Nausea
Diarrhea
Muscle weakness
Hyperkalemia Causes?
Causes:
-Most often a truly of impaired renal excretion/ renal failure
-Excessive intake of potassium
-Certain medications
-Cushing syndrome
-Extensive tissue damage caused by trauma or burns
-Severe infections causing the release of intracellular potassium
Hyperkalemia Clinical Causes?
Causes:
-excessive/rapid infusion of IV fluids without supplemental potassium potassium
-Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors
-Angiotensin II receptor antagonist
-Potassium-sparing diuretics (spironolactone)
