What is meant by statistical infrequency?

Suggests a person’s trait, thinking or behaviour is classified as abnormal if it is rare or statistically unusual.

2
New cards

What suggests this is an accurate way of defining abnormality?

The definition works well for objective characteristics, such as IQ. As only 2% of people have an IQ score below 70 and they may be diagnosed with intellectual disability disorder.

Why is this definition not always accurate in defining abnormality?

The definition assumes that anyone whose behaviour differs from average is abnormal, and common behaviour is normal. However, some unusual behaviour is desirable such as an IQ above 130, and some undesirable behaviour like depression is relatively common.
