Describe the method to measure the EMF of an electrochemical cell
Clean a piece of copper and a piece of zinc using fine grade sandpaper
Degrease the metal using some cotton wool and propanone
Place the copper into a 100cm3 beaker with about 50cm3 of 1moldm-3 CuSO4 solution
Place the zinc into a 100cm3 beaker with about 50cm3 of 1moldm-3 ZnSO4 solution
For salt bridge- lightly plug one end of the ends of an inverted U-tube and fill with NaCl then plug free end and join the 2 beakers so plugged ends are in separate beakers OR use a strip of filter paper soaked in saturated KNO3 solution
Connect the half cells by connecting the metals to the voltmeter, using crocodile clips, and read off the voltage
What is salt bridge used for?
Connects circuit by allowing movement of ions
Why do you need to file/sand away the outer layer of the metal?
To remove the oxide layer on the outside of the metal
Why is a platinum electrode used when the half cell doesnt contain a conducting metal?
Platinum is unreactive and can conduct electricity
