What is the cerebral cortex

The outer part of the brain

2
New cards

What are the four lobes of the central cortex

  1. Frontal lobe

  2. Parietal lobe

  3. Occipital lobe

  4. Frontal lobe

3
New cards

What is the function of the frontal lobe

Responsible for movement of the body , personality and high levels thinking

Motor area is located in this area -

4
New cards

What is the role of the parietal lobe

Responsible for processing information from our senses

Consists of the somatosensory area

5
New cards

role of the Occipital lobe

Responsible for recovering and processing visual information

Consists of visual area

6
New cards

What is the role of the temporal lobe

Responsible for analysis of speech and speech related information

7
New cards

What is meany by aphasia

The term given to someone h who has lost the ability to understand or produce speech

8
New cards

What is the role of the brocas as area

Brocas area is responsible for the production of speech

Damage to this area may lead to brocas aphasia whereby individuals may have an impaired ability to produce speech

9
New cards

How did the discovery of the Broca’s area form

  • patient tan - could only say the word tan

  • Broca conducted a post mortem on his brain after he died

  • And found a lesion in his left frontal lobe

10
New cards

What is the role of the wrinkles area

Responsible for language comprehension

Damage to this area may led to wernickes aphasia whereby individuals have an impaired ability to understand speech

11
New cards

How did wernicke discover localisation of speech

Examined brains of patients who could produce speech but not understand it

Found lesions in the left temporal part of the brain

12
New cards

Strength of development of Broca’s area

Paul broca studied 8 other patients who all displayed speech problems

They all had lesions in the left frontal lobe like patient tan

Increasing the validity of brocas findings

13
New cards

Limmitation of brocas area

Research in 2007

Conducted an MRI on patient tans brain ( the patient in which lead to the discovery of Broca’s area)

Found he had damage on many other areas in his brain

Thus it is unclear whether it was the Broca’s area aloe that contributed to his impaired ability to produce speech - language may not be localised to this one part of the brain

14
New cards

Phineas gage

Pole through his head

Post damage it was reported he was never the sae

Lead to researchers to localise personality to the frontal lobe

15
New cards

What is meant by hemispheric lateralisation

The theory that certain functions are controlled by one side of the brain and not the other

16
New cards

What is meant by contralateral organisation

The idea that opposite hemispheres control opposite sides of the body

  • the left hemisphere controls the right side of your body

  • The right side the left side of your body

17
New cards

What is the corpus callosum

A bundle of nerves connecting the left and right hemisphere

18
New cards

What are split brain patients

Split brain patients are patients who have had their corpus callosum severed to remove communication between the two hemispheres

This was conducted as a treatment for severe epileps
