Structure
The outline or rule book for government institutions, defined by the constitution.
Function
How an institution operates within its structural rules to make policy or conduct oversight.
Power
The defined abilities of an institution, usually as stated in the constitution.
Authority
The allowance given by one entity to another to exercise power.
Power of the Purse
The power of Congress to impose taxes and spend money.
Economic Powers
Financial powers granted to Congress, such as taxing and spending.
Tariffs
Taxes imposed by Congress on imported goods.
Declare War
The power of Congress to officially declare war against another nation.
Defensive War Making
The ability of the president to repel invasions without congress's declaration.
Offensive War Making
The power of Congress to declare war or initiate military action.
Impeachment
The process by which the House of Representatives can remove a member from office.
Regulating Interstate Commerce
The power of Congress to regulate trade and transportation across state lines.
Enumerated Powers
Specific powers granted to Congress outlined in the constitution.
Pork Barrel Legislation
Funds allocated by Congress for local projects, often used to gain favor with constituents.
Casework
Assistance provided by members of Congress to constituents dealing with the federal government.
Oversight
The power of Congress to supervise and check the work of federal agencies.
Federal Reserve
The central banking system of the United States, given authority by Congress to manage money supply.
Immigration Rules
Laws and procedures regarding immigration established by Congress.
Federal Bureaucracy
The administrative system governing any large institution, typically including agencies like the IRS, FAA, and FBI.
Judicial Powers
The powers granted to Congress to establish and regulate the federal court system.
