In-App Message Layout

  1. ‘Full Page (default)’ - layout fills the screen and require interaction. Use for a welcome series, sales or promotions.

  2. ‘Banner’ - layout appears at the top or bottom of the screen and done not require interaction. Use it for quick updates such as transaction confirmations.

  3. ‘Modal’ - layout shows part of the screen and requires interactions. Use it for contextual updates, coupon codes, and feature reviews. Contextual updates: trigger depends entirely on what the user is doing right now.

Contextual updates

Location-Based Context (Geofencing & Beacons):

  • Geofencing: The modal triggers automatically when a user crosses a pre-defined virtual boundary (like entering a 500-meter radius around your physical retail store.

  • Beacons: The modal triggers using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) when a user walks past a precise indoor display, such as a specific restaurant counter or grocery aisle.

App Event-Based Context (In-App Activities)

  • Cart Interaction: A modal triggers the moment a user hits the checkout page or drops a premium item into their digital cart.

  • App Lifecycle: A modal pops up exactly when the app is launched (e.g., displaying a "Welcome Back" discount code) or immediately after a user completes a level or profile update.

Persona-Based Context (Data Segmentation)

  • The Smart Hybrid: A user walks into a coffee shop (Location Context). Instead of sending a generic alert, the app checks their profile and serves a modal saying "Welcome back, loyalty member! Try our new pastry" only if they have a history of buying baked goods.

Two templates:

Standard template - single media

In Content panel enter title and subtitle for message

  1. Add URL or AMPScript

  2. Enter alternate text

  3. Select use different media for Android

Select an Open Behavior - select from 1 of 4:

  • ‘Open the App’ - open app when recipient taps the message.

  • ‘Go to App URL’ - opens specific page in your app when recipient taps message.

  • ‘Go to Web URL’ - opens default web browser and loads specific URL when recipient taps message.

  • ‘Go to CloudPage’ - opens Cloudpage when recipient taps the message.

Set up sound on IOS devices - select from 1 of 3:

  • ‘Device Default’ - use default notification sound set by device.

  • ‘Custom’ - allow yo to use custom sound file, default is custom.caf; ask developer for custom sound file.

  • ‘None’ - makes notification silent.

Set up message for Android

  • ‘Small icon’ - appears in top status bar next to app name and notification. helps user identify your app during notification, only PNG.

  • ‘Large icon’ - appears on right side of notification is non expanded view, PNG file can be a file in app or URL.

  • ‘Sound’ - select sound options from dropdown menu similar to IOS Configuration section.

Customize behavior and appearance of Interactive buttons

  • ‘Label’ - enter text to display on button. Each button must have label, icon or both. Otherwise you will get error when activating or validating the journey.

  • ‘Identifier’ - unique name or ID to distinguish this button from other.

  • ‘Icon’ - Optionally select an icon to display with label.

  • ‘Open Behavior’ - select how the button behaves when clicked.

In Design panel - optionally customize button styles, such as font size, style and color.

In Subscriber-level preview - review message by clicking ‘Subscriber Preview’.

Click ‘Save’.

Carousel template - up to six images

SDK version - MobilePush SDK version 9.0 or later required.

IOS Category - for IOS device need developer to add category string to your app. Then go to MobilePush Setup > Administration and input it into the ‘Advance Template Category’ field.

Android require no extra setup.

In Carousel Configuration panel:

  • Title & Subtitle - enter overarching text that appears at the top of the message.

  • Body Text - enter the main copy for notification.

  • Open Behavior - define what happens when user click the overall notification. Choose 1 of 4: ‘Open the App’, Go to App URL (deep link)’, ‘Go to Web URL’ or ‘Open a Cloudpage’.

Design Individual Carousel Cards

  1. In Card Details, next to ‘Card 1’, click ‘Edit’.

  2. Add Media - paste an image URL use AMPscript or browse your Content Builder library to select impage.

  3. Add Text - enter a unique caption or subcaption specific to individual slide.

  4. Override Open Behavior (Optional) - by default each card inherits the global open behavior. However you can customize the destination like deep link each card to a different product page in your app.

  5. Click the back arrow, then click ‘Add Card’ to repeat the process for ‘Card 2’ through 6. Use up and down arrow in the panel to reorder your card at any time.

  6. Use ‘Real-Time Preview’ pane on the right to see how the carousel layout looks across different devices.

  7. In ‘Subscriber Preview’, if you use personalization string or AMPscript verify how it dynamically render for individual contacts.

  8. Click ‘Save’.

In Journey Builder with Push Notification Carousel Card

  1. Open Journey Builder, drag ‘Push Notification’ activity onto your canvas.

  2. Click the activity, select ‘Content Builder’ and choose the carousel notification you just saved.

  3. Under Message Configuration, select the specific Mobile App instance (choose which application name/brand to send the message) you are sending to.

  4. Click ‘Send Test’ directly within the activity settings to send a live test carousel to a specific test device ID or contact key before activating the fully journey.

Line Layout

  1. ‘Multi Content Message’ - A modular block layout where you can stack and combine up to five unique content elements (such as mixing text, video, audio, and images) inside a single message bubble.

  2. ‘LINE Carousel Layout’ - A rich-media horizontal layout block that lets users swipe through a series of cards featuring distinct product images and call-to-action buttons.

WhatsApp Template Layouts (Meta / Sinch)
These require approval from WhatsApp before you can use them in Journey Builder.

  1. ‘Standard Text & Media’ - A structured layout containing an optional header (image, video, or document), a text body (supporting personalization via AMPscript), and a text footer.

  2. ‘Quick Reply Layout’ - Features your main content block accompanied by up to three quick-tap buttons that users can select to reply instantly.

  3. ‘Call-to-Action (CTA) Layout’ - A layout structured with up to two action buttons, allowing the user to click a link (to go to a specific URL) or directly trigger a phone call.

  4. ‘Carousel Layout’ - A layout containing multiple scrollable visual cards, where each individual card supports its own unique image, text description, and selection button.

  5. ‘Interactive List / Catalog Layout’ - Formats interactive storefront components directly within the layout, including single or multi-product catalogs, or a structured list menu containing up to 10 choices.

WhatsApp Session Layouts

Used for continuous, two-way conversational streams (triggered within a 24-hour window of a user's reply). These layouts are completely flexible and do not require pre-approval from WhatsApp:

  • ‘Free-Form Media blocks’ - Directly send custom images, location pins, texts, or digital stickers without rigid structural formatting.
