How to treat a burn casualty?
1. Eliminate the source of the burn
2. Remove/cut nearby clothing to uncover burns (including jewelry)
3. Apply dry, sterile bandages to burnt areas
4. Keep casualty warm to prevent hypothermia
How to treat a penetrating eye injury?
1. Place casualty in comfortable position
2. Remove headgear and eyewear
3. Examine eye for deformities, penetrating objects, etc.
4. Cover the injured eye with a rigid eye shield or other objects such as a plastic cup
5. Secure eye shield with tape at 45 degree angle from cheek to forehead
6. If conscious, administer Combat Wound Medication Pack (CWMP)
How to apply a splint?
1. Identify location of fracture, keeping area stabilized
2. Check distal (further away from fracture) pulse and capillary refill (color returning to pressed nail bed)
3. Align splint with limb to maintain a straight resting position
4. Ensure joints above and below fracture are immobilized
5. Recheck distal pulse
6. Administer Combat Wound Medication Pack (CWMP) as needed and antibiotics for open fractures
How many fingers should you use to clear an airway and why?
2 fingers, even if unconscious, the casualty can bite off a single finger.
How to treat an individual for hypothermia if they have a spinal injury?
Cover the top of the body with blankets or jackets, do not attempt to rotate the body to prevent further spinal damage.
How often do you check your fingers when searching for massive bleeding?
Every 5 seconds or every few taps in a certain area
What are signs of a punctured lung?
Uneven rising of the chest, one lung doesn't rise, sucking or hissing sound, air bubbles/frothy blood
