Camp David Accords

A period of relaxed tensions between the US and Soviet Union during the 1970’s, characterized by increased diplomacy and trade

A federal agency established in 1970 to regulate pollution and protect human health and the environment
Gerald Ford
Vice President under Richard Nixon. Becomes President once Nixon resigns due to Watergate. He upsets the American public by pardoning Nixon and loses the 1078 election to Carter.
Iran Contra Affair
A secret 1980s operation where the US sold weapons to Iran to fund “Contra” rebels in Nicaragua, despite a Congressional ban
Iran Hostage Crisis
A 44-day period (1979-1981) where American diplomats were held captive by Iranian students following the Iranian Revolution
Jimmy Carter
Democratic President 1977-81. Elected because he is seen as a DC outsider. Known for the Camp David Accords. His Presidency is remembered for failing to get Iran Hostages released and the Panama Canal Treaty
Kent State Shooting
killing of four and wounding of nine unarmed college youths by the Ohio National Guard troops on May 4, 1970 during a rally opposing the expanding involvement of the Vietnam War, the National Guard presence on campus and the draft.
Nixon Doctrine
Nixons Domestic Policy were the US supports Asian Allies with money and weapons instead of troops.
New Federalism
States are given more control over how federal funds are spent in the states, increasing their rights, which had been taken away in the New Deal and Great Society.
OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries)
An organization of oil-producing nations that caused a massive US energy crisis in 1973 by halting oil shipments
Panama Canal Treaty
America agrees to turn over control of the canal by 1999. It;s seems as President Carter giving the canal away.
Pentagon Papers
Classified government history documenting the mistakes and deception by the government during the Vietnam War. Leaked by a military analyst whistle blower and published in The New York Times in June 1971
Richard Nixon
Republican President 1969-1974. His domestic policy was called New Federalism. Supported Detente and normalized relations with China. Starts withdrawal of troops form, Vietnam war and resigned form office due to Watergate.
SALT (Strategic Arms Limitation Talks)
Negotiations and treaties between the US and USSR aimed at limiting the number of nuclear missiles each country could possess (SALT 1, 1972) and tighter restrictions on new missile technologies and launchers (SALT II, 1979)
Staglfation
A difficult economic period during the 1970’s featuring both high inflation (rising prices) and high unemployment (stagnant growth)
Title IX
A 1972 law prohibiting gender discrimination in any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance
Twenty-Sixth Amendment
Ratified in 1971; lowered the voting age form 21 to 18
Vietnamization
Plan to withdraw f=troops form Vietnam while still providing funds to support the South Vietnamese resistance of North Vietnam and Viet Cong
Watergate
A major political scandal involving a break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters that led to President Richard Nixon’s resignation in 1974
