Morpheme
A group of sounds that is meaningful and can be used to form words.
Root
A morpheme that can exist independently and has meaning, such as 'eat'.
Affix
A morpheme that is added to a root; can be a prefix or suffix.
Prefix
An affix added to the beginning of a word.
Suffix
An affix added to the end of a word.
Grammatical Suffix
A suffix that does not change the class of a word, such as '-s' for plural.
Derivational Suffix
A suffix that changes the class of a word, such as '-ly' which turns an adjective into an adverb.
Word Family
All the words that can be formed from a single root.
Polymorph
An organism that can take many forms.
Morphology
The study of morphemes.
Phoneme
A meaningful sound in a language.
Civil
Relating to the affairs of citizens; can also mean polite.
Civilize
To make more culturally advanced.
Quickly
An adverb made by adding '-ly' to the adjective 'quick'.
Expectation
A noun derived from the verb 'expect'.
Explosion
A noun formed from the verb 'explode'.
Shape
A noun and verb that means to give form to something.
