Insomnia
A sleep disorder characterized by persistent difficulty falling or staying asleep, typically lasting for three months or more.
Onset Insomnia
A type of insomnia where individuals have difficulty falling asleep at the beginning of the sleep cycle.
Maintenance Insomnia
A type of insomnia characterized by waking up in the middle of the night and having trouble returning to sleep.
Terminal Insomnia
A type of insomnia where individuals wake up far too early in the morning, often hours before their intended wake time.
Primary Insomnia
Insomnia that arises from internal psychological factors such as anxiety or stress.
Secondary Insomnia
Insomnia that results from external factors or conditions, such as substance abuse or chronic pain.
Nightmares
Dreams that featured negative emotional content and occur during REM sleep.
Night Terrors
Episodes of intense panic that occur during non-REM sleep, where individuals wake up with racing hearts and heavy breathing.
Restless Leg Syndrome
A condition that causes discomfort and the urge to move the legs, which can interfere with sleep.
REM Behavior Disorder
A sleep disorder where individuals physically act out their dreams due to a lack of normal paralysis during REM sleep.
Somnambulism
Also known as sleepwalking, a disorder where individuals perform activities while in a sleep state without recollection of dreams.
Sleep Apnea
A disorder characterized by obstructed airways during sleep, leading to gasping and interrupted sleep.
Narcolepsy
A neurological disorder characterized by spontaneous and uncontrollable episodes of sleep, often entering REM sleep immediately.
