Topic 1

Pluralism vs Elitism

2
New cards

For 1

-interest groups represent a wide range of views, esp minority- important for democracy -politicians more aware of wide range of view when making decisions.

Example 1: AARP (American association for retired people)
-largest membership interest group, 1/10 of population (size of california)

-direct lobbying, policy reports-major role in creation of medicare prescription drug benefit 2003

Example 2: NRA

-advocate for protection of 2nd amendment, oppose firearm regulation

-donated 4.3 million in 2023-2024 for campaign

-NRA grading system (A→-E) based on record on gun rights

-endorsement cost seat

-getting pro gun candidates elected-shifted legal interpretation of 2nd amendment

2008 SC ruling in district of columbia v Heller -recognised individual rights to own firearms

→representation of gun right supporters, contribute to implementation of policies that reflect will of population

→good for democracy: variety of interest represented in congress -policy making

Against 1

Dominance of money funded by interest group-undermine legitimacy of the government

-Citizens united v FEC -rise of SuperPACs-turned elections into funding race-politicians dependent on sponsorship to win-forced alignment with interest groups

-wealthiest, powerful interest groups-afford expensive lobbying and campaign donations-disproportionate influence

Example 1:
Chamber of Commerce (represent Meta, Amazon, Tesla-largest business interest group)-76 million spent in 2024 election cycle alone

-Put significant pressure on trump admin on US tariff by direct lobbying-admin adopted tariff exemption for small business

-undermine democracy as rep listen to rich and powerful rather than minority and wide range of voice

Example 2: AIPAC (America Israel Political action committee) 2024

-15 million in primary (most expensive primary in US history) to unseat the left wing (critical of israel hamas war) rep New York 16th district-Bowman

-showcase how elitist interest group with large funding can manipulate electoral outcome-influence policy making in congress

New cards

Topic 1 Mini judgement

Although interest groups can enhance representation for minority and marginalised communities, superior argument is that they often lead to unequal representation by prioritising interest of wealthy and powerful minority voice.
-Chamber of commerce impact on tariff reversal demonstrate how corporate interest overshadow public needs (protecting domestic jobs)

Topic 2

Education vs Misleading electorate

6
New cards

For 2

-Interest group represent freedom of speech in US constitution-raise public awareness of important issues-help hold gov account by creating informed society through education-strengthen democratic participation, improve responsiveness, transparency of gov

Example 1: Black lives matter

protest-15-26 million participation, #BlackLivesMatter social media-raise awareness about racial inequality

-provide politicians with expert information in helping formulate policy, drafting legislation

Example 2: AARP

-Rx Price Watch-monitor price of prescribed drugs and testify before congress to provide data on the economic impact of legislation(esp healthcare) on older population

-help congress make informed laws that benefit the older population in US

7
New cards

Against 2

Interest groups can manipulate public policy in ways that don’t align with general public’s preference, thereby negatively affecting democratic responsiveness

Example 1: NRA
strong campaign against gun control and funds research and adverts that supports gun ownership rights

critics argue they downplay research linking gun ownership with gun violence when firearms are the No1 cause of children/teens death, higher than motor vehicle accidents

-when interest groups advocate for policy based on biased evidence, public opinion skewed towards the interest of one group rather than for the benefit of wider public

Example 2: APL (American Petroleum institute)
Representing oil and gas industry- its economic importance and large funding-their reports influence debate more than others

critics argue-they fund campaigns that question climate science, oppose environmental regulation

lead to unequal influence where powerful economic interest can inform lawmakers and shape policy more than ordinary citizens

8
New cards

Topic 2 mini judgement

Whilst interest groups may sometimes misalign public policy with biased information dominated by wealthy organisation-distort democratic decision making, their capacity to education and inform public and policy makers-superior benefit that outweigh the cost

9
New cards

Topic 3

Protection of rights

10
New cards

For 3

Interest groups can protect constitutional rights by challenging gov action and ensuring laws are consistent with constitution

Example 1: AFL-CIO

frequently challenge labour policies that undermine workers’ rights

Lawsuit against federal workforce changes (2026): AFL-CIO along with other affiliates filed lawsuit to block administration efforts to reclassify gov workers-easier to fire

-bringing cases to court, campaign on workers rights-ensure gov remain accountable to working americans

Example 2: NRA
By getting pro gun candidates elected, successfully shifted legal interpretation of 2nd amendment

2008 SC ruling district of columbia v Heller-recognised the individual rights to own firearms-ensure 2nd amendment is protected

-interest group provide additional check on gov power, protecting civil liberties and ensure that citizens esp minority groups rights are protected

11
New cards

Against 3

Not all interest groups are interested in protecting existing rights:

some seek to undermine existing rights to suit their own agenda

Example 1: Americans United for Life (AUL)

interest groups can lobby congress in selection of judges for SC-impact on how constitution is interpreted

AUL strong advocate of Amy Coney Barrett as SC nominee bc of her anti-abortion viewpoint-contribute to overturning of Roe v Wade (6-3) on Dobbs v Jackson case

-by advocating for protecting unborn child’s rights, they hinder rights of pregnant women by removing federal constitutional protection for abortion rights

Example 2: NRA

-spent millions lobbying, funding campaigns to oppose stricter gun control legislation

-critics argue NRA influence contributed to blockage of laws like Manchin Toomey Amendment (2013) bipartisan proposal aimed at expanding background checks post Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting but failed to reach 60 vote threshold in senate

→prioritising gun rights over regulation can undermine public rights to safety

-when powerful groups like AUL and NRA dominate lobbying, judicial influence, prioritise interest of members over broader public, limit gov ability to protect its citizens

12
New cards

Topic 3 mini judgement

Whilst interest groups can defend constitutional rights, their influence can also distort policymaking and prioritise narrow interest over wider need of society
