How to work out rate of reaction with tangent (at 5 seconds)

How to work out rate of reaction with tangent (at 5 seconds)

Draw tangent line, work out gradient by making it into a triangle,

Work out y (vertical side) = 17 (27 - 10)

Work out x (horizontal) = 6.5 (8 - 1.5)

y / x = 2.62 mg /s

What does rate of enzyme controlled reaction base on

Depends on frequency of successful collisions between substrate molecules and active site.

Explain this graph

Explain this graph

At start , lots of large amount of substrate molecules, high frequency of collisions between active site and substrate, so rapid initial rate of reaction

As reaction takes place, some of substrate converted to product, amount of substrate molecules then fall, chance of substrate colliding with active site decreases, reaction slows down

At certain point, all of substrate molecules converted to product, so no more substrate molecules left to collide with active site, so reaction stops.
