Burns
Damage to the skin caused by thermal, chemical, electrical, or radiation sources, classified by severity based on the extent of tissue damage.
Epidermis
The outermost layer of skin, important for protection and regulation.
Dermis
The layer of skin beneath the epidermis, containing blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue.
Hypodermis
The subcutaneous layer of fat and connective tissue beneath the dermis that insulates the body.
Hypovolemic Shock
A condition that occurs when a significant amount of blood volume is lost, leading to decreased circulation and organ failure.
Rule of Nines
A method for assessing burn area by dividing the body into sections, each representing approximately 9% of total body surface area.
Hypermetabolism
Increased metabolic rate that occurs in response to significant tissue injury such as burns, leading to increased energy and nutrient demands.
Eschar
A thick, necrotic tissue that forms on a burn wound, which can impede healing and blood flow.
Thermal Burns
Burns resulting from exposure to flames or hot surfaces.
Chemical Burns
Burns caused by contact with acidic or basic substances that damage tissue.
Electrical Burns
Injuries caused by electrical current passing through the body, leading to entry and exit wounds.
Inhalation Injury
Damage to the respiratory system resulting from inhalation of smoke or harmful chemicals.
Glycogen Storage
The storage form of glucose in the body, which is utilized during periods of high metabolic demand.
Metabolic Changes
Alterations in the body's metabolism due to severe injury, affecting energy utilization and nutrient requirements.
Rhabdomyolysis
A condition involving the breakdown of muscle tissue, which can occur following severe burns and results in the release of myoglobin into the bloodstream.
Acute Kidney Injury
A sudden loss of kidney function, often related to decreased blood flow and oxygen delivery during episodes like hypovolemia.
Bronchoscopy
A diagnostic procedure used to visualize and assess the condition of the airways and lungs, especially in cases of smoke inhalation.
