a unique number assigned to a device on a network that identifies it so data can be sent to the correct destination
MAC (media access control) address
a unique identifier assigned to a Network Interface Card (NIC)
what’s the difference between a MAC and IP address?
MAC address is a hardware address that doesn’t change, while an IP address can change
router
a device that sends data between different networks, connect a LAN to the internet
what information does a router use to redirect data?
routing table
how can a router connect to networks?
through cables or wirelessly
what happens when a router receives a data packet?
Checks destination
Sends to local switch/hub if for local network
Sends to another router if for external network
