Information Systems
An organized system for collecting, storing, and communicating data.
Transaction Processing System (TPS)
An organized collection of people, procedures, software, databases, and devices used to record completed business transactions.
Management Information System (MIS)
An organized collection of people, procedures, software, databases, and devices that provides routine information to managers and decision makers.
Decision Support System (DSS)
An organized collection of people, procedures, software, databases, and devices used to support problem-specific decision making.
Value Chain
A series of activities that adds value to raw materials before they are sold to customers.
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) System
A set of integrated programs that manage vital business operations for an entire multi-site organization.
Computer-based Information System (CBIS)
A single set of hardware, software, databases, telecommunications, people, and procedures configured to process data into information.
Feedback
Information from the system that is used to make changes to input or processing activities.
Data
Raw facts that are processed to create information.
Characteristics of Valuable Information
Accessible, accurate, complete, economical, flexible, relevant, reliable, secure, simple, verifiable, and timely.
