Adaptation
A trait or characteristic that helps a living organism survive and reproduce in its environment.
Taproot
A thick, main root that grows straight down into the soil, with smaller side roots branching off from it.
Fibrous Root
A root system made up of many thin, branching roots that spread out in all directions near the surface of the soil.
Xylem
Transports water and minerals from the roots up to the rest of the plant.
Phloem
Transports sugars (food) made in the leaves to the rest of the plant.
Tuber
A thick, underground stem that stores food for the plant.
Runner
A thin stem that grows along the ground and can grow new plants at different points.
Chlorophyll
A green pigment that absorbs sunlight for photosynthesis.
Diffusion
Movement from high concentration to low concentration.
Osmosis
Movement of water across a membrane from high to low concentration.
Fibre
Provides support and structure.
Pollination
Transfer of pollen from anther to stigma.
Germination
Seed sprouts and grows into a new plant.
Seed
Contains a baby plant and stored food.
Anther
Produces pollen.
Petal
Colourful part that attracts pollinators.
Sepal
Protects the flower bud.
Selective Breeding
Choosing organisms with desired traits to reproduce.
Genetic Engineering
Changing an organism’s DNA.
Fertilizer
Adds nutrients.
Clay
Holds water well.
Loam
Best for growth.
Silt
Holds some water.
Sand
Drains quickly.
Salinization
Buildup of salt.
Monoculture
One type of crop.
Yield
Amount of crop produced.
Pesticide
Kills pests.
Irrigation
Supplying water to crops.
