What are binocular depth cues

Binocular depth cues are ways we judge distance using both eyes together. Because each eye sees a slightly different image, the brain compares them to work out how far away objects are.

2
New cards

What is retinal disparity

This is the small difference between the image seen by each eye.

  • Objects that are close create a bigger difference between the two images.

  • Objects that are far away create a smaller difference.

3
New cards

What is convergance?

This is how much your eyes turn inward to focus on an object.

  • For near objects, your eyes turn in more.

  • For far objects, your eyes stay more relaxed.

What is monocular depth cues?

Monocular depth cues are ways we judge distance using one eye only. These cues are often based on what we have learned from experience.

5
New cards

what is one example of monocular depth cues

1. Height in Plane

Objects higher up in our visual field usually seem farther away.

6
New cards

What is occlusion?

If one object blocks another, the blocked object is seen as farther away.

7
New cards

what is lineasr perspective?

Parallel lines appear to get closer together as they move into the distance.

8
New cards

what is motion parallax?

When you move, nearby objects appear to move faster than distant ones.

9
New cards

what is one example of motion parallax?

When riding in a car, nearby objects like telephone poles appear to whiz by very quickly

10
New cards

easy way to remember them

  • Binocular cues = need both eyes

  • Monocular cues = can use one eye only
