Primary function of the respiratory system
To bring oxygen into the body and remove carbon dioxide.
Respiratory System Organs
Nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs.
Nose
An organ that warms, filters, and humidifies air during respiration.
Pharynx
The throat; serves as a passageway for both air and food.
Larynx
The voice box that contains the vocal cords.
Trachea
The windpipe that carries air to the lungs.
Bronchi
The two main branches that carry air into the lungs.
Bronchioles
Smaller branches of the bronchi located inside the lungs.
Alveoli
Tiny air sacs where gas exchange occurs.
Oxygen movemenet
The gas that moves from the alveoli into the blood.
Carbon dioxide movement
The gas that moves from the blood into the alveoli.
Diaphragm
The muscle primarily responsible for breathing.
Inhalation
The process during which the diaphragm contracts and moves downward.
Exhalation
The process during which the diaphragm relaxes and moves upward.
Respiration
The process of exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide.
