what is an EEG (electroencephalograph)
an EEG is a device that detects, amplifies and records electrical activity of the brain
how does an EEG work
it involves small electrodes being attached to the scalp. each electrode receives signals from thousands of neurons in the brain.
what does the EEG do
the EEG turns the information from the electrodes into the visual pattern of brain waves
what is an EOG (electroculargraph)
an EOG is a device that detects, amplifies, and records electrical activity of the muscles responsible for eye movement
how does an EOG work
it involves small electrodes being attached to the upper face around the eyes. each electrode receives signals from the contractions of the muscles that are responsible for eye movement
what does the EOG do
the EOG then turns this information from the electrodes into the visual pattern
what does the EOG detect
the EOG detects less eye movement when in NREM sleep but a lot of eye movement when in REM sleep
what is an EMG (electromyograph)
an EMG is a device that detects, amplifies, and records electrical activity of the muscles
how does an EMG work
it involves small electrodes being attached to the lower face around the jaw. each electrode receives signals from the contractions of the muslces
what does the EMG do
the EMG then turns this information from the electrods into the visual pattern
what does the EMG detect
the electromyography will show less muscle contractions when we are asleep and a compeltely relaxed state (no muscle movement) during REM sleep
