Working memory model

  • Proposes short term memory is not a single store but a dynamic system with multiple components responsible for holding and manipulating information.

  • Includes the central executive, phonological loop, visuospatial sketchpad and later the episodic buffer (Baddeley, 2000)

2
New cards

Central executive

Additional controller allocating resources between subsystems. It has a limited capacity (Baddeley, 1996)

3
New cards

Phonological loop

  • Deals with speech-based info.

  • Has 2 parts: the phonological store and articulatory control process

4
New cards

Visuospatial sketchpad

  • Handles visual and spatial information

  • Divided into visual cache (form, colour) and inner scribe (movement, spatial rehearsal) (Logie, 1995)

5
New cards

Episodic buffer

  • Integrates info from subsystems and LTM into coherent episodes (Baddeley, 2000)
