Nail Anatomy
The parts of the nail include the nail plate, nail matrix, and nail bed; nails protect the fingertips and enhance sensation.
Nail Plate
The visible part of the nail, made of translucent keratin, revealing a pinkish hue due to underlying blood vessels.
Eponychium
Commonly referred to as the cuticle, it is the tissue that overlaps the nail plate, providing a waterproof barrier.
Hyponychium
The area between the nail plate and fingertip that serves as a junction and also provides a waterproof barrier.
Contraindication
A disease or disorder that prevents a treatment from being carried out on nails, such as fungal infections.
Lymph Nodes
Organs where lymphocytes collect when fighting infections, often swelling during illness.
Brachial Artery
The artery that supplies blood to the hand and arm.
Metacarpals
The bones in the back of the hand that connect to the fingers (phalanges).
Extensor Carpi Ulnaris
A muscle in the lower arm responsible for wrist movement.
Onychomycosis
A highly contagious fungal infection causing discoloration and abnormal nail growth.
Client Consultation
The process of reviewing client information to ensure safe and appropriate nail treatments.
Dappen Dish
A small container used for holding liquids like acetone during nail treatments.
Gel Polish
A type of nail product applied similarly to nail polish, requiring curing under UV or LED light.
Exothermic Reaction
A reaction that releases heat, which can occur during the curing of gel products under a lamp.
Habitat Tic
A condition where repetitive picking at the cuticle area harms the nail matrix, leading to abnormal nail growth.
Nail Infill
The process of restoring growth to gel nails, typically done every three weeks to maintain the appearance.
