what are reciprocating endodontic files?
reciprocating endodontic files are nickel-titanium instruments powered by a special motor that uses reciprocating motion, alternating clockwise and counterclockwise movements rather than continuous rotation. this motion mimics manual filing (watch winding) but with more power and efficiency. it's significantly reduces torsional stress on the file and lowers the risk of file fracture.
Types of reciprocating endodontic files
Wave One
Recirpoc (not mentioned in lecture)
Descriptions of NiTi reciprocating files
NiTi reciprocating file system developed by Dentsply Maillefer
uses special motors: X-SMART Plus or WAVEONE motor
files are single use and come in pre sterilised blister packs
three sizes available:
smaill (ISO 21, taper .06)
Primary (ISO 25, taper .08)
Large (ISO 40, taper .08)
comes in 21mm, 25mm and 31mm lengths
accessories: matched paper points, gutta percha cones, obturators, THERMAPREP 2 oven
gentle in and out (pecking) motion
Advantages of NiTi reciprocating rotary instruments
advantages:
single use → eliminate sterilisation, lowers breakage risk
no cross contamination
optimised for reciprocating motion → smooth, efficient shaping
the control of breakage and wear due to new files for every patient
Sequence of working steps with reciprocating NiTi rotary instruments
access cavity preparation and canal location
glide path with K-file (size 10-15)
irrigation
choose Appropriate WAVEONE file size
Determine working length (radiograph or apex locator)
insert file in reciprocating motion (pecking action)
clean file and irrigate after several pecks
repeat shaping until full working length is reached
final irrigation (use EDTA if needed)
dry canal and obturate using matching points/ obturators
WaveOne and WaveOne Gold - key differences
Material
WaveOne: M-wire NiTi
WaveOne Gold: Gold-wire NiTi (Heat-treated, more flexible)
Flexibility and strength:
WaveOne Gold is more flexible and has a greater fatigue resistance
Cutting Design:
WaveOne: Convex triangular cross section
WaveOne Gold: parallelogram cross section → smoother cutting
Sizes and tapers:
WaveOne: small (21/.06), primary (25/.08), large (40/.08)
WaveOne Gold: adds mediumm (25/.06) and more refined tapers
Saftey and control
WaveOne Gold reduced screwing effect → safer in curved canals
Motor compatability:
WaveOne: X-SMART Plus, WAVEONE motor
WaveOne Gold: X-SMART iQ, WAVEONE Gold motot
Efficiency:
WaveOne Gold cuts more efficicnetly and smoothly
Use
Both are single-patient, single-use
