Vocation
The life-calling of every person, created in everyone by God, involving elements such as work, personal growth, career, and possibly marriage.
Charity
The spiritual virtue given by the Holy Spirit to empower people to love God and others for God’s sake alone, freeing them to live the Ten Commandments.
Virtue of Religion
The virtue of respecting the rights of God to adoration, prayer, and sacrifice.
Atheism
Rejecting the existence of God and living as though there is no God.
Agnosticism
The belief that nothing certain can be known about God.
Blasphemy
The act of expressing irreverence towards God or sacred things.
Perjury
Lying under oath in a court of law.
Moral Principles
Principles used for evaluating whether a thought, word, or action is right or wrong, based on behaving in God-like ways.
Natural Law
The moral law that follows from the understanding of moral principles by human reason, being in harmony with the nature of every human being.
Moral Relativism
The misconception that what is right or wrong depends entirely on an individual’s point of view or personal choice.
Decalogue
Another name for the Ten Commandments, revealed by God to help people live in ways consistent with human nature.
The Golden Rule
The moral principle stated by Jesus as: '… always treat others as you would like them to treat you …'
Yahweh
The divine name revealed to Moses, which translates to 'He is' or 'I am,' substituting for titles like Lord or God to show reverence.
Israelite
A descendant of the patriarch Jacob, who was also called 'Israel.'
Sinai Covenant
The covenant initiated by God with the people of Israel around 1290BC to free them to relate more closely with Him.
Free Will
The endowment which allows all people to have the basic human yearning and desire for freedom.
Relevant Knowledge
The skill of weighing up pros and cons and learning about alternatives to work out which course of action is correct.
Evangelical Counsels
The Gospel advice to imitate Jesus by following the principles of chastity, poverty, and obedience.
Consecrated Religious
Women and men, including sisters, monks, and priests, who publicly promise to live a life of Gospel chastity, poverty, and obedience.
Monks
Men living a monastic life in a community, derived from the Greek word 'monos' meaning 'alone'.
Lectio Divina
A systematic reading of spiritual material and meditation in silence, meaning 'divine reading'.
Apostle
From the Greek 'apostolos', meaning 'one sent'; the twelve disciples called by Jesus to lead His followers.
Holy Orders
The sacrament of apostolic ministry through which the mission entrusted by Christ to His apostles continues to be exercised.
Apostolic Succession
The process where spiritual gifts and responsibilities are passed down from the Apostles to bishops over past generations.
Deacon
From the Greek word 'diakonia' meaning 'service'; ordained ministers called to help bishops and priests in roles of liturgy, word, and charity.
Viaticum
Final communion given to the dying, meaning 'provision for a journey'.
Seminary
An educational institution where a person's 'seed' of a vocation is nurtured for the priesthood over 6 or 7 years.
Celibate Love
The inclusive love of a single person that enables them to respond to the needs of all people at any time.
Procreation
The cooperation of parents in God’s creation of their children, including their care and development until adulthood.
Suffering Servant
The biblical prophecy fulfilled by Jesus, who wins God’s favor for others by taking their guilt upon Himself.
Eucharist
The new sacrifice instituted by Jesus at the Last Supper that replaces all Jewish Old Covenant sacrifices with His own body and blood.
Spiritual Discernment
A process by which a person in faith and love tries to discover God’s will in a situation, choosing the values of Jesus.
Salvation
From the Latin 'salus' (healing); God’s saving action on behalf of the human race to destroy the power of original sin.
Triduum
The four days of Easter services—Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Sunday—a word meaning 'three days'.
