Scientific Method
The process used in science to answer questions about the natural world.
Identify the Problem
Using information collected through observation (five senses) to develop a question you wish to answer.
Observation
The use of the five senses to collect information.
Hypothesis
A predicted answer to a question which may be worded as an "If….then" statement.
Independent Variable
The one factor that is being manipulated (changed) in the experiment.
Dependent Variable
The one factor that is being measured to see how it responds to the Independent variable.
Experimental Group
The specimens that you are exposing to or changing the independent variable in.
Control Group
The specimens you do not expose to or change the independent variable in, allowing for comparison to see if the independent variable had an effect.
Large Sample Group
An experimental design involving multiple specimens to ensure the accuracy of results.
Trials
Multiple performances of an experiment conducted to ensure there were no errors made in its design or performance.
