The ways in which countries around the world interact with the environment and how this affects the places on the globe.
Economic Globalization
The process of expanding the world trading networks.
Political Globalization
The process by which political decisions and actions are becoming increasingly international.
Cultural Diversity
A variety of human cultures in a specific region or in the world as a whole, e.g., Anime, K-pop.
Universalization of Popular Culture
The spread of one popular culture (trends, customs, practices) or monoculture around the world.
Transnational Corporations
A company that operates in multiple countries and has large amounts of revenue.
Media Transnational Corporations
Global companies that produce much of the popular culture we engage in, e.g., TikTok, TV show companies, music, film companies.
Hybridization
The mixing of identities and cultures in new and different ways.
Homogenization
A trend toward uniformity, specifically with the world popular culture as a result of globalization.
Assimilation
The absorption of a minority group by a dominant group.
Marginalization
When there’s a group that is 'left out' of society and has no political, social, or economic status, e.g., LGBTQ, POC, women.
Accommodation
An inclusive approach that allows religious or ethnic groups to maintain their distinctive characteristics.
Integration
The incorporation of diverse minority groups into mainstream society.
Acculturation
Change as a result of contact with other cultural groups.
Monoculture
A culture that is the same in many different places.
Cultural Revitalization
The process of affirming and promoting individual and collective cultural identity.
Affirmation of Identity
Resisting the urge to blend in with the crowd and acknowledging/standing up for who you are.
Commodify
To turn an object, idea, or service into a commodity for sale.
Urbanization
When people move from rural areas to bigger cities.
