Ocular lens
The eyepiece of the microscope which provides 10× magnification.
Objective lenses
Lenses that provide varying levels of magnification, typically 4×, 10×, and 40×.
Stage
The component located below the objective lenses where the slide is placed.
Course and fine focus
Knobs located on the sides of the microscope used to adjust the clarity of the image.
Microscope Handling
A protocol requiring the use of two hands: one hand on the base and one hand on the arm.
Initial Focusing Step
The process of choosing the 4× objective lens or the lens with the lowest magnification before placing the slide.
High-Power Focusing Rule
When using the 10× and 40× objectives, only the fine focus should be adjusted; the course focus must never be used.
Total magnification
A value telling you how magnified an image is compared to its actual size, calculated using the formula: (ocular lens)×(objective lens)=total magnification.
40× Total Magnification Example
The result of multiplying a 10× ocular lens by a 4× objective lens (10×4=40×).
Brightness adjustment
A control located on the side of the microscope base.
