What is memory?
The ability to store and use records of your experience to guide behavior.
Facets of remembering
Different processes involved in storing and using experiences.
Sensory Memory
A type of memory that holds information for a brief period.
Working Memory
A short-term memory system that actively holds and processes information.
Long-Term Memory
A memory system with unlimited capacity and potentially unlimited duration.
Explicit Memory
Memory of facts and experiences that can be consciously recalled.
Implicit Memory
Memory that influences behavior without conscious awareness.
Priming
A process by which retrieval of information is enhanced by recent exposure to the same or related information.
Schema
Mental templates that summarize what we know about certain events or situations.
Elaboration
Relating new information to existing knowledge to increase memory retention.
Misinformation Effect
When a memory is altered based on incorrect information provided after the fact.
Retrieval
The process of accessing and bringing into consciousness information stored in memory.
