Self-awareness
How good you know yourself regarding interests, skills, strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes, goals, values and beliefs.
Self-esteem
How much you like yourself and how confident you are.
Self-development
How you improve yourself by building up your strengths, improve your weaknesses, develop your life skills and become the best person you can be.
Gender
Roles, behaviours, activities and qualities that society sees as suitable for men/women; it is learnt and not a biological function.
Sex
Biological qualities that define men and women.
Power relations
Sharing of power between people in a relationship, where dominance is often determined by gender and sex.
Job
A form of employment where you get paid and may need only basic training.
Occupation
Work that you do which requires special education, training or a skill.
Career
An occupation that you have for the larger part of your life which gives you opportunities to progress.
Career field
A grouping of occupations that are common regarding skills, knowledge and work setting.
Realistic (Personality Type)
People who prefer to work with their hands, tools, and machinery, or outdoors with plants and animals.
Investigative (Personality Type)
People who prefer to work on their own in a research environment to investigate facts and solve problems.
Artistic (Personality Type)
People who enjoy working in environments including writing, acting, visual arts, and popular entertainment.
Social (Personality Type)
People who enjoy communicating with others, helping, teaching, or taking care of people.
Enterprising (Personality Type)
People who prefer activities through which they can influence, persuade, or motivate others to achieve a common goal.
Conventional (Personality Type)
People who prefer routine, pre-determined instructions, and systematic processing of information in a controlled environment.
Bursary
An amount of money given to a needy student to help pay for tertiary studies that does not need to be paid back.
Student loan
Money borrowed from a financial institution for studies that needs to be paid back with interest.
Scholarship
A once-off monetary grant awarded by a company or organization for high performance in sports or studies.
Learnership
A program that allows you to earn while you learn, combining college theory with practice in a real job.
Income tax
A tax that individuals and companies pay based on what they earn or their profits.
Tax year
A period beginning on 1 March and ending at the end of February the next year.
VAT
Value Added Tax; a 14% tax included in the price of all goods bought by everyone.
SITE
Standard income tax on employees; paid by those who earn less than R120000 a year.
PAYE
Pay as you earn; tax deducted from a salary every month for those earning more than R120000 per year.
Provisional tax
Tax paid twice a year by people who do not have a consistent monthly income.
Cardiovascular fitness
Having a strong heart and capillary vessels and a large lung capacity.
Muscular strength
Possessing strong muscles and tendons.
Endurance
The ability to exercise for a long time without getting tired.
Flexibility
The ability to move your joints and use your muscles through their full range of motion.
Diversity
The state of being different, including differences in culture, race, language, gender, and age.
Discrimination
Treating people unfairly and differently, which denies them their rights, power, and privileges.
Xenophobia
Prejudice or fear directed against foreign nationals or people from other countries.
Human trafficking
The global illegal transport of people across international and local borders for exploitation.
Prejudice
To judge people based on untruths and differences without finding the facts.
Bill of Rights
Chapter 2 of the South African Constitution which enshrines rights based on dignity, democracy, equality, and freedom.
South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC)
The national institution that promotes, protects, and monitors human rights for everyone.
