Action Verbs
Verbs that indicate an action and can be transitive (requiring a direct object) or intransitive (not requiring a direct object).
Transitive Verbs
Action verbs that are followed by a noun which is the direct object receiving the action.
Intransitive Verbs
Action verbs that do not have a direct object and can be followed by an adverb or adverb phrase.
Direct Object
The noun that receives the action of a transitive verb.
Example of Transitive Verb
In the sentence 'I read a book,' 'book' is the direct object.
Example of Intransitive Verb
In the sentence 'He slept,' there is no direct object.
Modal Verbs
Verbs that add meaning to the main verb regarding possibility or time, such as 'can' or 'should'.
Auxiliary Verbs (Linking Verbs)
Verbs that connect the subject to a noun or adjective that describes it, such as 'be,' 'is,' 'am,' 'have,' etc.
Subject Complement
The noun or adjective that follows a linking verb and describes the subject.
Examples of Auxiliary Verbs
be (am, is, are, was, were), have (has, have, had), do (do, does, did).
