People moved because they wanted a better education for their children.
In 1826, 70% of Argyll’s population were literate, compared to only 30% of the Hebridean population. Therefore, people internally migrated because they could have their children gain access to better education which they could find internally migrating to the city, which would allow their child to obtain more opportunities and a materialistically better future, something many parents want for their child.
People moved because of improvements in transportation.
People moved because of industrial work
Women moved for employment in domestic work and services.
People moved because the city had more sources of entertainment.
People moved because there were opportunities for better social lives in the city
