Substance use complication
A medical emergency caused by overdose, withdrawal, or reaction to drugs or other substances; officers must focus on scene safety, airway, breathing, and prompt EMS activation
Opioid overdose
A life-threatening condition caused by too much opioid drug, usually leading to slowed or stopped breathing
Naloxone
A medication that can reverse the effects of opioid overdose
Fentanyl
A very powerful synthetic opioid that can cause overdose and requires careful exposure precautions
Withdrawal
Physical and mental symptoms occurring after stopping or reducing a substance the body has become dependent on
Diabetic emergency
A medical emergency caused by blood sugar being too high or too low
Insulin pump
A device that continuously delivers insulin to a person with diabetes
Continuous glucose monitor
A device that measures glucose levels throughout the day
Seizure
Sudden uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain that may cause convulsions, staring, or altered awareness
Asthma
A condition causing narrowing and inflammation of the airways and difficulty breathing
Stroke
A medical emergency caused by blocked or bleeding blood vessels in the brain
BEFAST
A stroke-recognition mnemonic: Balance, Eyes, Face, Arm, Speech, Time
Heart attack
A condition where blood flow to part of the heart is blocked, damaging heart muscle
Hyperthermia
Dangerously high body temperature
Heat cramps
Painful muscle cramps caused by heat and dehydration
Heat exhaustion
A heat illness causing weakness, sweating, nausea, and dizziness
Heat stroke
A severe life-threatening heat illness involving overheating and possible altered mental status
Frostbite
Freezing injury to body tissues, often affecting fingers, toes, nose, or ears
Abdominal pain
Pain in the abdomen that may signal a serious medical condition
Poisoning
Illness or injury caused by a toxic substance entering the body
Poisoning by ingestion
Poison entering the body by being swallowed
Poisoning by inhalation
