Countercurrent exchange
An arrangement where opposite flow directions maximize oxygen uptake.
Tidal breathing
A breathing pattern where air moves in and out through the same path.
Unidirectional breathing
A breathing pattern characterized by a one-way flow of air.
Hemoglobin
The protein that carries oxygen in the blood.
Iron
The metal ion used by hemoglobin for oxygen transport.
Open circulatory system
A system where fluid is not confined to vessels.
Closed circulatory system
A system where blood stays within vessels.
Pulmonary circulation
The movement of blood to the lungs.
Systemic circulation
The movement of blood to the rest of the body.
Right ventricle
The chamber of the heart that pumps blood to the lungs.
Left ventricle
The chamber of the heart that pumps blood to the body.
Systole
The phase of heart contraction.
Diastole
The phase of heart relaxation.
Heart attack
Tissue death in the heart caused by blocked blood flow.
