Planet
A celestial body moving in orbit around a star, which is spherical in shape, and has enough mass to clear its orbit of other similar sized bodies. Earth is a planet.
Natural Satellite
A naturally existing celestial body that revolves around a
planet.
Terrestrial Planet
Four smaller, inner planets with rocky surfaces.

Mercury
Closest planet to the sun. Named for the Roman Messenger of the Gods. Similar size to Earth's moon, and like the moon has no atmosphere and is covered with craters caused by asteroid collisions.

Venus
Second planet from the sun. Names for the Roman Goddess of Love. Called Earth's Twin due to similar size. Hottest planet in the solar system due to extremely thick atmosphere which traps heat.

Mars
Fourth planet from the sun. Named for the Roman God of War. Called the Red Planet due to its color caused by iron oxide in its crust. Has two moons.

Phobos and Deimos
Two moons of Mars. Named for the God of War's
attendants, Fear and Terror. Thought to be asteroids captured by Mars' gravitational pull due to their non-spherical shapes.
