Cantata

Contains a series of movements. Is unstaged (no acting or sets), but fit for public performance. Contrast to an opera which is staged. Contains recitative and aria.

Two-tempo form

Slow then fast, or fast then slow. Usually not an instant transition, and is within a single movement or piece. Not just speed but also in character.

The Mass Song

La Marseillaise. Is currently the national anthem of France, but it was originally composed as a marching song for volunteers from Marseille during the French Revolution. Represented the idea that “ordinary” people can fight for change.

Sonata

For one or more instruments. Usually in 3 or 4 movements, in contrasting keys and tempos.

Cyclic form

Themes return in multiple movements of a work, and unify the entire composition. An idea heard later appears somewhere else in altered or recognizable form. Creates unity across the entire piece.
