Theoretical Yield
The amount of product formed from the complete conversion of a given amount of reactant to product.
Actual Yield
The amount of product obtained in an experiment.
Percent Yield
Actual yield expressed as a percentage of the theoretical yield.
Percent Yield Formula
% Yield = (Actual Yield / Theoretical Yield) x 100%.
Theoretical vs. Actual Yields
Theoretical yield is calculated and larger, while actual yield is measured and smaller.
Complete Reaction of C3H8
C3H8 + 5 O2 → 3 CO2 + 4 H2O reflects the combustion of propane.
Example of Percent Yield Calculation
If the actual yield is 45.2 g of CO2 and the theoretical yield is 57.3 g of CO2, the percent yield is 78.9%.
