What is the Principle of Conservation of Energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be transferred between different stores. The total amount of energy before a transfer is equal to the total amount after the transfer.
Name 4 types of energy stores.
Gravitational potential
Kinetic
Thermal
Elastic potential
(chemical????)
Give 3 ways energy can be transferred?
Radiation
Electrically
Mechanically
What is work done?
A transfer of energy from one store to another.
Energy transferred when a force causes an object to move
State the equation for work done when force and motion are in the same direction.
W = F s
What is 1 joule?
The work done when a force of 1 N moves an object 1 m in the direction of the force
State the equation for work done when the force acts at an angle to the direction of motion.
W - F s cos(θ)
Why is no work done if the force is perpendicular to the direction of motion?
Because cos(90) = 0, so the force has no component in the direction of motion
What does the area under a force-distance graph represent?
The total work done
State the equation for the work done stretching a spring.
W = 0.5 F ΔL
