Simple Squamous Epithelium
Simple squamous epithelium is a single layer of flat cells with disc-shaped nuclei and does passage of materials through diffusion and filtration and is found in alveoli of the lungs, kidney glomeruli, blood vessels, and serosae.
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
Simple cuboidal epithelium is a single layer of cube-shaped cells with round central nuclei and does secretion and absorption and is found in kidney tubules, glands, and the ovary surface.
Simple Columnar Epithelium
Simple columnar epithelium is a single layer of tall column-shaped cells that may contain goblet cells and cilia and does absorption; secretion of mucus, enzymes, and other substances and is found lining the digestive tract, gallbladder and ducts of some glands, and if ciliated, lines small bronchi, uterine tubes, and uterus
Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium
Pseudostratified columnar epithelium is a single layer of cells that appear stratified but all touch the basement membrane and does secretion of mucus and propulsion of mucus through cilia and is found in the trachea and upper respiratory tract if ciliated and non ciliated is found in ducts of male reproductive tubes and ducts of large glands
Keratinized Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Keratinized stratified squamous epithelium is many layers of cells with a surface layer of dead keratin-filled cells and does protection from abrasion and water loss and is found in the epidermis.
Nonkeratinized Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelium is many layers of living squamous cells and does protection in moist areas and is found in the mouth, esophagus, vagina, anus, and urethra.
Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium
Stratified cuboidal epithelium is usually two layers of cuboidal cells and does protection and is found in ducts of sweat, mammary, and salivary glands.
Stratified Columnar Epithelium
Stratified columnar epithelium is several layers of cells with elongated surface cells and does protection and secretion and is found in the male urethra and large ducts of glands.
Transitional Epithelium
Transitional epithelium is a stratified epithelium with cells that change shape when stretched and does allow distension of urinary organs when filled with urine and is found in the urinary bladder, ureters, and urethra.
Areolar Connective Tissue (Proper)
Areolar connective tissue is a loose connective tissue with a gel-like matrix containing collagen, elastic, and reticular fibers and does wrap and cushion organs and hold tissue fluid and is found under epithelia and around organs and capillaries. Main cell type fibroblasts
Adipose Tissue (Proper)
Adipose tissue is connective tissue composed of closely packed fat cells and does energy storage, insulation, and protection and is found under the skin and around kidneys, eyeballs, abdomen, and breasts. Main cell type fibroblasts
Reticular Connective Tissue (Proper)
Reticular connective tissue is a loose network of reticular fibers in a soft matrix and does form a supportive framework and is found in lymph nodes, spleen, and bone marrow. Main cell type fibroblasts
Dense Irregular Connective Tissue (Proper)
Dense irregular connective tissue is connective tissue with thick collagen fibers arranged in many directions and does withstand tension and provide strength and is found in the dermis and fibrous capsules of organs. Main cell type fibroblasts
Dense Regular Connective Tissue (Proper)
Dense regular connective tissue is connective tissue with parallel collagen fibers and does attach muscles to bones and bones to bones and is found in tendons and ligaments. Main cell type fibroblasts
Elastic Connective Tissue (Proper)
Elastic connective tissue is connective tissue with abundant elastic fibers and does allow stretch and recoil and is found in artery walls, bronchial tubes, and certain ligaments. Main cell type fibroblasts
Hyaline Cartilage
Hyaline cartilage is firm but flexible cartilage with a glassy matrix and fine collagen fibers and does support, cushion, and resist stress and is found in the trachea, nose, costal cartilage, and fetal skeleton. Main cell type chondrocytes
Elastic Cartilage
Elastic cartilage is cartilage similar to hyaline but with more elastic fibers and does maintain shape while allowing flexibility and is found in the external ear and epiglottis. Main cell type chondrocytes
Fibrocartilage
Fibrocartilage is cartilage with thick collagen fibers and less flexible matrix and does absorb shock and provide tensile strength and is found in intervertebral discs, pubic symphysis, and knee joints. Main cell type chondrocytes
Bone Tissue
Bone tissue is a hard connective tissue with calcium salts and collagen fibers and does support and protect organs and store minerals and is found in bones. Main cell type osteocytes
Blood
Blood is a connective tissue with cells suspended in plasma and does transport gases, nutrients, and wastes and is found within blood vessels. Main cell type, red blood cells and white blood cells
Skeletal Muscle
Skeletal muscle is long, striated, multinucleate muscle fibers and does voluntary movement and is found attached to bones. Main cell type skeletal muscle fibers
Cardiac Muscle
Cardiac muscle is branching, striated muscle cells connected by intercalated discs and does pump blood and is found in the walls of the heart. Main cell type cardiac muscle cells
Smooth Muscle
Smooth muscle is spindle-shaped, nonstriated muscle cells arranged in sheets and does involuntary movement of substances and is found in walls of hollow organs. Main cell type smooth muscle cells
Nervous Tissue
Nervous tissue is tissue composed of neurons and supporting neuroglia and does transmit electrical signals and is found in the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. Main cell type neurons
Connective Tissue Mesenchyme
Has a gel like substance, cells are start shaped mesenchymal cells. All connective tissues arise from mesenchyme in the embryo
