General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS)
Your body has three ways to deal with stress: get ready, fight back, or get really tired.
HPA Axis
This is like a boss in your body that tells other parts to help you when you're stressed.
Cortisol (CORT)
A special helper in your body that gets made when you're stressed.
Innate Immune System
The first thing your body uses to fight germs quickly.
Adaptive Immune System
This part learns how to fight specific germs.
Dopamine
A happy chemical in your brain that makes you feel good when you have fun.
Substance Use Disorder
When someone can't stop using something that makes them feel bad after a while.
Reward Circuit
Parts of your brain that make you feel happy when you get something good.
Withdrawal Symptoms
Feeling yucky when you stop using something your body got used to.
Tolerance
When you need more of something to feel the same way you used to.
Reward Prediction Error
When what you get is not what you thought you would get.
Chronic Stress
When you feel worried for a long time.
Addiction Mechanisms
How things trick your brain into wanting more.
