Cultural competence
An ongoing process where nurses strive to work within the client's cultural context, using attitudes, skills, behaviors, and policies to establish effective interpersonal relationships that supersede cultural differences.
Cultural safety
Achieving cultural safety in nursing practice through a stepwise progression of cultural awareness, cultural sensitivity, and challenging unequal power relations, enabling safe care to be defined by those who receive it.
Cultural humility
Ongoing commitment to lifelong learning, critical self-reflection, and addressing biases and power imbalances within relationships to promote understanding and equality.
Colonialism
The takeover of a minority population by another nation, resulting in unequal relationships and the imposition of values and beliefs on the people.
Race
A socially constructed category used to classify humankind based on physical characteristics, with no biological basis and meaning dependent on social definitions.
Racism
A complex system of racial hierarchies and inequities, asserting one group's inherent superiority over others, leading to discrimination and domination.
Antiracism
Conscious decisions to make frequent and equitable choices daily, opposing racism and promoting equality.
Equity
Treating everyone fairly according to their needs.
Diversity
The presence of people from many different groups in society.
Inclusion
Allowing and treating different types of people fairly and equally.
Cultural context of health and illness
The interpretation and definition of experiences related to life transitions within the context of culture, including birth, illness, and death.

The importance of promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in nursing practice to ensure fair treatment, understanding, and appropriate care for all individuals and communities.
