As tough as old boots
Refers to someone extremely resilient and strong, like an 82-year-old who still works on her farm after surviving cancer twice.
Deep down
Describes a person's true inner feelings or character that may be different from their public appearance.
On the surface
The outward impression a person gives, which may contrast with their actual clinical or kindness.
Played it cool
To pretend not to care or to maintain a calm exterior even when feeling excited or interested.
Under someone's thumb
To be completely controlled by another person and allow them to make all of one's important decisions.
A quick temper
The tendency to become angry very easily over the smallest things.
As mad as a hatter
Describes someone who has very unusual ideas, wears bizarre clothes, or talks to imaginary friends.
As thick as two short planks
A way to describe someone who is very unintelligent or frequently fails to understand simple instructions.
Mad keen on
To be extremely enthusiastic about a specific hobby or subject, talking about it constantly and spending hours practicing it.
Hopping mad
To be absolutely furious or extremely angry.
A creature of habit
Someone who follows a strict routine, such as eating at the exact same time and sitting in the same seat every day.
A real live wire
A person who is exceptionally energetic, full of ideas, and always smiling.
A bright spark
A creative and intelligent person needed to solve problems and introduce fresh ideas.
A soft touch
Someone who is easily persuaded and never says no, especially when asked for money.
An unknown quantity
A person whose skills, value, or qualities are not yet known to others.
The salt of the earth
A highly respected, good, and honest person who helps others and volunteers in the community.
The scum of the earth
Despicable people who commit cruel acts, such as tricking the elderly out of savings, and show no remorse.
Nobody's fool
Someone who is sharp and observant and cannot be easily tricked or overcharged.
A nasty piece of work
A person who is unpleasant, dishonest, bullies others, and takes credit for work they did not do.
A cold fish
Someone who is polite but shows very little emotion or warmth, making them seem unfriendly.
A woman of her word
A person who can be trusted because she always keeps her promises.
