Supporting Details
Facts, examples, or evidence that explain or support the main idea
Topic
The general subject of a passage (usually one or two words)
Summary
A brief statement of the main idea and key points without extra details
Inference
A conclusion based on evidence and reasoning, not directly stated
Explicit Information
Information that is clearly and directly stated in the text
Implicit Information
Information that is suggested but not directly stated
Author's Purpose
The reason the author wrote the text (inform, persuade, entertain)
Tone
The author's attitude toward the subject (serious, sarcastic, formal, etc.)
Bias
A personal opinion that may prevent objective judgment
Fact
A statement that can be proven true
Opinion
A belief or judgment that cannot be proven
Context Clues
Words or phrases around an unfamiliar word that help determine its meaning
Text Structure
How a passage is organized (compare/contrast, cause/effect, sequence, problem/solution)
Cause and Effect
Shows how one event leads to another
Compare and Contrast
Explains similarities and differences between ideas
Sequence
Information presented in order (chronological steps or timeline)
Problem and Solution
Presents an issue and how it is resolved
Theme
The deeper meaning or lesson of a passage
Point of View
The perspective from which the story is told (1st, 2nd, 3rd person)
