Sanyasi revolt
A rebellion between 1763−1800 in Bihar and Bengal led by Majunu Shah and others, sparked by the famine of 1770 and economic hardships.
Anandmath
An 1882 novel by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay based on the Sanyasi revolt, containing the national song Vande Mataram.
Izaredar system
A new land revenue system introduced in 1772 that triggered revolts in Midnapore and Dhalbhum (1766−74).
Moamarias
Low caste peasants in Assam following the teachings of Aniruddhadeva who challenged the Ahom King between 1769−99.
Vizayaramaraju
Raja of Vizianagaram who led a revolt in 1794 in the Northern Circars against the British demand for 3 lakh rupees.
Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja
Leader of the Kerala resistance (1797−1805) against exorbitant taxes, known for using guerrilla warfare techniques.
Wazir Ali Khan
Leader of the Civil Rebellion in Awadh (1799) involved in the Massacre of Benares, where George Fredrick Cherry was killed.
Poligars
Landed military magnates in South India who revolted in two phases (1795−1805) against British taxation and attempts to disband their private armies.
Kundara Proclamation
An open call issued by Diwan Velu Thampi of Travancore in 1808−09 for taking up arms to oust the British.
Ikarnamahs
Contractual obligations used to bind down the hereditary chieftains of Bundelkhand between 1808−12.
Paika Rebellion
An 1817 uprising in Odisha led by Jagabandhu Bidyadhar, regarded as India's 1st mutiny against the British.
Ahom Revolt
An 1828 rebellion in Assam led by Gomdhar Konwar because the British failed to withdraw after the 1st Burma War (1824−26).
Gadkaris
A hereditary military class in Maratha fort garrisons who revolted in Kolhapur (1844) due to unemployment after their garrisons were disbanded.
Wahabi Movement
An Islamist revivalist movement in the 1860s led by Syed Ahmed of Rai Bareilly, aiming to convert Dar-ul-Harb (land of kafirs) into Dar-ul-Islam.
Namdhari Sikh sect
A sect founded by Baba Ram Singh as part of the Kuka Movement in Punjab (1840) which advocated Swadeshi and Non-cooperation.
Narkelberia Uprising
The 1st armed peasant uprising against the British, led by Titu Mir (1825−35) in West Bengal against the beard-tax.
Pagal Panthis
A semi-religious group of Hajong and Garo tribes led by Karam Shah (1825−35) who attacked zamindar houses over rent issues.
Faraizi Revolt
A movement (1838−1857) led by Haji Shariat-Allah and his son Dadu Mian aiming to expel British intruders from Bengal.
Damni-kol area
The territory in the Rajmahal Hills declared during the Pahariyas’ Rebellion (1778) against British expansion.
Chuar Uprising
Also known as the Revolt of the Jungle Mahal (1776), occurring in Midnapore and Bengal due to economic privation.
Ulgulan / The Great Tumult
A major uprising led by Birsa Munda in Chhotanagpur against feudal tenures and dikus, leading to the Chhotanagpur Tenancy Act of 1908.
Santhal Rebellion
An 1855−56 revolt in the Rajmahal Hills led by Sidhu and Kanhu against outsiders (dikus), resulting in the Santhal Pargana Tenancy Act of 1876.
Diku
A term used by tribes like the Santhals and Mundas to refer to exploitative outsiders, such as zamindars and moneylenders.
Chakra Bisnoi
The leader of the Khond Uprisings (1837−1856) who opposed the British suppression of human sacrifice.
Tirath Singh
The leader of the Khasi Uprising (1829−1832) aimed at driving away strangers from the Khasi Hills.
