What four actions can a force be?
Push, pull, stretching, or twisting
What are interaction pairs of forces?
Forces that work in pairs, acting on different objects.
What are some examples of forces?
Pull, push, friction, air resistance, gravitational force, buoyancy, thrust, magnetic force
What is the unit of measurement for force?
Newtons (N)
What's the difference between mass and weight?
Mass is the amount of matter in an object, while weight is the gravitational force between an object and Earth.
In what units do we measure mass?
Kilograms and grams
In what units do we measure weight?
Newtons
What is tension force?
A pulling force transmitted through a rope, string, or cable.
What is the relationship between downward arrow force and upward arrow force?
Downward arrow force will be weight and upward arrow force will be reaction force
What is friction?
A force that slows down an object.
How does surface roughness affect friction?
Rough surfaces cause more friction than smoother surfaces
What variables are changed, measured, and kept constant in friction experiment?
Independent Variable: type of surface; Dependent Variable: time taken for the object to reach the bottom; Control Variable: same object, the angle of elevation of the ramp.
How do you find the average/mean?
Add together all of the numbers and divide that sum by how many numbers there are.
In the context of friction, what is the relationship between surface texture and friction?
The rougher the surface, the higher the friction.
What is air resistance?
A force that slows down an object in air.
How does surface area affect air resistance?
Larger surface area causes more air resistance than smaller surface area.
What is needed to keep constant in investigating of air resistance experiment?
The mass of the object, the material, the height dropped
What kind of force is air resistance?
Resistive force
Give examples of resistive forces:
Friction, Water resistance, and Air resistance
What is meant by 'down'?
Objects are attracted towards the centre of Earth
How can one escape the Earth's gravity?
Reach the escape velocity to exit Earth
What is the effect of gravity on any object?
Pull objects down
What factors affect gravity?
Mass and distance; the larger the mass, the higher the gravitational pull.
Why does a hammer fall faster than a feather in atmosphere?
The hammer has a smaller surface area than the feather, so has less air resistance.
What is Gravitational strength on earth?
10N
Formula for calculating weight:
Weight = Mass x Gravity
Formula for calculating mass:
Mass = Weight / Gravity
