DNA
the hereditary material found in the cell,
contains all the instructions for life

base pair
the bases (adenine, guanine, cytosine,
thymine) pair up to form the rungs of the
DNA ladder. A bonds to T. C bonds to G

nucleotide
a subunit of DNA made of a sugar,
phospate and one base

chromosome
DNA and proteins coiled up and condensed into "X" shaped structures

double helix
the twisted ladder shape of the DNA molecule, alternating sugars & phosphates are the sides and bases are the rungs

cell cycle
the life cycle of a cell; the stages are: interphase, mitosis, and cytokinesis

mitosis
division of the nucleus in eukaryotic cells that forms two identical body cells

asexual reproduction
reproduction in which ONE parent produces identical offspring (ex. binary fission, regeneration, budding)
centrioles
organelles that develop spindle fibers and are used by the cell to move chromosomes around during cell division

sexual reproduction
reproduction that requires TWO parents that produces offspring that share characteristics of both parents
