Classical conditioning
Automatic, unconscious learning process - neutral stimulus becomes associated w/ a naturally occurring response
Ex: Pavlov's dogs:
If food = salivation
Bell + food = salivation
Then later, bell alone = salivation
What does classical conditioning explain?
Development of fears, phobias
What treatment modality addresses phobias, etc. that have been classically conditioned?
Exposure therapy: gradual exposure to feared stimulus (without negative outcome) helps reduce response
Classical conditioning exam tips
