Huge proportion of Russian countryside was in serious disorder
Peasantry went on a rampage: Rent strikes ,land seizures, terrorism
Terrorist attacks killed 1k in 1906 and 3k in 1907

Attempts to pacify the peasants began in 1905 under Durnovo
First 6 months: 15k killed, 20k wounded, 45k exiled to Siberia
Redemption payments dropped in 1907 but had no impact
Aug 1906 - Countryside declared as in state of emergency, meaning gov could imprison for up o 6 months without a trial
Field court martials: No right to representation at trial, trials held in secret, death sentence by hanging as punishment, no appeals allowed
