What is the function of skeletal muscle?
Moves the skeleton and is responsible for locomotion.
What is a tendon?
Cords of connective tissue that attach skeletal muscles to bones.
What are muscle fibers?
Long cylindrical cells that make up muscle tissue, typically multinucleate.
What is the sarcoplasmic reticulum?
The specialized endoplasmic reticulum of muscle cells, involved in calcium ion storage.
What is a sarcomere?
The contractile unit of striated muscle, consisting of overlapping thin and thick filaments.
What is the sliding filament model?
A theory that explains muscle contraction through the sliding movement of actin and myosin filaments.
What is cardiac muscle?
Striated muscle found in the walls of the heart, featuring branched cells that contract simultaneously.
Define smooth muscle.
Muscle tissue found in the walls of hollow organs; not striated and contracts more slowly than skeletal muscle.
What are the three types of skeletons?
Hydrostatic, exoskeleton, and endoskeleton.
What is cartilage?
Flexible skeletal tissue composed of chondrocytes, collagen, and lipoprotein material.
What is bone?
Rigid skeletal tissue made up of collagen and inorganic minerals like hydroxyapatite.
Describe the function of the skeleton.
Support and protect internal organs, and facilitate movement.
